Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

After lunch, I pressed on to the Baltic to see the Antony Gormley display. In a previous post I mentioned the Angel of the North, this is a well known piece of Antony’s and the Baltic contained many more selections from his work. The Baltic is a refurbished Grain Building and is taller than it is wide, which means lots of steps. My recommendation is to take the elevator to the top floor and work your way down through the exhibits.

The exhibits are larger than life in the Baltic; nothing small here. First there was the sea of stick people and then a maze of cement castles where the further you ventured into the center the harder it got to find your way out. I met many bewildered adults on this trek desperate to find their way out, and tons of kids just having a blast. Then there was the floor full of fruit hanging from the ceiling, all strangely like the giant scrotum displayed at the entrance to the Baltic.

The more I visit museums like this around the world the more I wonder, Why can’t we have museums like this in Calgary?
