Lixing-lès-Saint-Avold and Lelling, France

Below are a couple of scenes from Lelling and Lixing-lès-Saint-Avold in France; both are small towns located near Grostenquin — one of four RCAF air force bases established in Europe during the Cold War. The four were formed as part of Canada’s air defense commitment to NATO — though their existence was rather short lived. Grostenquin itself opened in 1952 and closed twelve years later after a dispute with France over nuclear weapons.

My mom (who lived in Grostenquin) will enjoy this website [link no longer available] (one of the many school photos may contain her smiling face). As well, she’ll be interested to know that this summer in Cornwallis, NS there is a 2(F) Wing RCAF Grostenquin Family Reunion (August 28 – 30, 2009).

  1. Hello,
I’m living in the village of Vahl-Ebersing, near Lixing and Lelling. I recognised two pictures of my village. The two pictures are: the one who is named “Lixing” and the other 2009-02-24a.
I would be so grateful if you could send me by mail these pictures in a good resolution…
    Thanking you in advance,
    Loïc

  2. Unfortunately the originals are actually slides taken by my grandfather in the 1950s and the photos in this post are the only resolution that exist.

  3. I’ve noticed there’s been a lot traffic to this post; probably because of the photos. I just found some larger versions and have uploaded them. Is there something specific you’re looking for? My grandfather took these photos in 1957-ish when he was stationed in Grostenquin.

    1. Hello,
I’ve noticed that you uploaded larger versions of these photos and i thank you for your work.
I am interessed by the pics sm-07-13 and sm-07-35 (i can see my house on one of them, a cyclist always on this photo that my neighbor could recognize, and i would be so happy if i could identify the two childs on the other one).
I’m sure that my neighbors would be happy too.
That’s why i need even better resolution of these pics… but it seem to be the better version that you have in your possession…
      Thank you again,
      Loïc

      1. I’ll have to find the slides but I’ll see what I can hone in on from those. Luckily they’re slides (photos in the 50s weren’t in colour). Unluckily we don’t have the technology to scan or view them effectively.

  4. Ok. I hope you have a very large monitor and a bit of patience, I have the best that I can do with a slide. If you get stuck, use the arrow keys to progress forward and back through the photos.

Honestly, I never noticed the man on the bicycle before. 🙂

    1. Hello,
I wanted to thank you again for your work.
I’v got a 28″ monitor, so i can easily look at all détails !
      I wish you a happy new year 2013 !
      All the best,
      Loïc
